Lasik & Beyond
LASIK is an outpatient refractive surgery procedure used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. A laser is used to reshape the cornea — the clear, round dome at the front of the eye — to improve the way the eye focuses light rays onto the retina at the back of the eye. A finely controlled laser is used to delicately shape the Cornea and is most commonly done by using a flap which is created by either a microblade or a bladeless laser and then hinged like the hatch on a submarine to apply the reshaping laser. The flap is then laid back into its original position and heals in place quickly.
In select patients, laser vision correction is also possible without creating a flap. The procedure just takes a few minutes and only requires eye drops afterwards to help it heal.
New state of the art procedures, beyond LASIK, that may correct near vision and distance vision may be available for you. One of these surgeries is SMILE LASIK.
